From all the news accounts I have been reading it seems that Francona chose to leave because he wasn't getting the respect he felt he should have gotten from some of the players in the clubhouse or the upper managment. There are other accounts saying he was fired, but most are saying he wanted to go.
One article in the globe today mentions the pitching staff (pitchers who don't expect to pitch that day)drinking (alcohol is implied) in the clubhouse, before and during games. IMO, it's just wrong, a couple drinks after a game maybe, but before and during? in the clubhouse? what's saying the other players weren't imbibing at the same time then walking out on the field to play?
Another mentions that the high profile all-star players just weren't listening to to Teri anymore. Ego's were running the show. And they weren't willing to work as a team because they were too busy worrying about their own stats.
The paper mentions a couple of possibilities for new managers. I'm not familiar with the names they tossed about, but Nick Cafardo appears to be focused on someone named Bobby Valentine. He also mentions Dave Martinez of the Rays organization.
Someone mentioned DeMarlo Hale, but they also speculated that he will follow Francona wherever he end up. Tim Bogar has managing experience, but is he ready to step up?
No matter who they get as a manager, I think we are going to see an entirely new line-up next season.
I'm guessing they'll keep... Ortiz, Papelbon, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Beckett(because he's signed through 2014 I think), Lester, (signed through 2013) Bucholz and Youkilis if they can come back from the injuries, but who else?
I would love to see them dump Lackey, Matsuzaka, Okajima, and a few others.
I really think they need to take a good look at the coaching staff as well, the new pitching coach didn't seem to work out this year.
We are definitely going to be seeing a different team next year.
